The Millstadt Men’s Baseball Team-swept through the Mon-Clair League Playoffs winning all four games against three of the elite teams in the league in August. The championship was the 2nd in five years for the “Green Machine”.
The playoff drive featured outstanding pitching, timely hitting and aggressive base running by the local squad.
Pitcher Andrew Yancik was the winning hurler in the 1st round win over perennial power Waterloo 7-2 and clinched the title defeating top seed Belleville 13-3. Joey Kossina threw a complete game gem versus 4th seed Cape Girardeau in the 2nd round winning 7-1.
Logan Boente gave a strong performance vs. top seed Belleville in the 1st of consecutive wins
against regular season champs Belleville. Yancik followed with the clincher.
Leading hitters throughout the playoffs for Millstadt included: Tony Kossina (7-16), John Hilpert (6-14) seven runs scored, Cal Kossina (5-14)
Including 2 doubles and a home run, 6 RBI’s, Darius Ford (6-14)with a double, two homers, six RBI’s, Jacob Wilson (7-11)five doubles and four runs scored, Mark Branz (5-13) and Hunter Grupe (5-14).
Tony Kossina who had 4 stolen bases to go with 5 runs and 4 RBI’s as well as playing flawless defense at his shortstop position was named playoff MVP.
The playoff’s demonstrated the spirited effort the young Millstadt squad put forth throughout the season.
